Assistance Dog Brings Stroke Survivor Freedom

A stroke survivor and his wife both regain their independence, thanks to Fort, his service dog.
Arnie and Fort

When Arnie Pike suffered a stroke, both he and his wife, Marilynn, saw their world get much smaller.  Arnie was not able to dress himself or move about the community independently.  He also suffered from bouts of depression.  Arnie and Marilynn’s life changed significantly, however, when Fort, a service dog from the Assistance Dog Institute (ADI), joined their daily routine.

Fort assists Arnie with life skills, such as dressing and turning on and off lights, and helps to ease his bouts with depression by providing comfort without judgment.  In addition, Fort, a natural people magnet, has transformed Arnie socially.  While he had always been more comfortable staying in the background, Arnie now enjoys answering questions from complete strangers about his loving companion when they are out in public.

Fort has given Marilynn her independence back, too.  Fort goes with Arnie wherever he goes, which gives Marilynn peace of mind knowing that Arnie always has the help he needs.  This has allowed both her and her husband to stay independent and active in their community.  It has also provided Arnie with a new sense of confidence, purpose and assurance.
